Travel Logistics for Exploring Long Island
The East End of Long Island is easily accessible via car, train, bus, or even ferry. From New York, the Long Island Expressway (Rte 495) runs the length until Riverhead. Or, Sunrise Highway (Rte 27) runs along the south side of Long Island and out to the Hamptons.
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) runs numerous trains throughout the day from Penn Station in Manhattan. Be advised that services to the North Fork and the South Fork are not as frequent as they are to the middle of the Island, so plan ahead.
Bus services from Manhattan include Hampton Jitney or North Fork Express. Both need to be booked in advance.
Ferry services connect Long Island to Connecticut. Riders can leave out of Port Jefferson or Orient Point.
All of those options, though, still require a car once you’re out on Long Island so it’s best to plan for a driver any way you look at it. Some companies offer private guided experiences and drivers. Lean back, relax, and blast Long Island’s patron saint, Billy Joel, for a wonderful adventure.
