A limestone campanile, or bell tower, stands at the edge of the road silently declaring there is something significant here, something you shouldn’t pass by. So you turn onto the gravel drive and wind your way up the hill through rows of Chenin Blanc grapevines until you reach the rustic villa at the top. It’s sun-drenched ochre walls, roughhewn, massive wood beams buttressing a dappled clay tile roof, oak-shaded patios, fountain, and rows of grapevines stretching toward the horizon are exactly how you pictured Tuscany would be. But you’re not in Italy, you’re in Fredericksburg, Texas. –Chris Dunn, Taste Magazine
Grape Creek Vineyard’s terroir has a rich legacy beyond it’s recent wine history. The property sits on what is believed to have been a Comanche campground. Evidence of their presence is in the form of spearheads, arrowheads and skinning tools found on the property. The banks of Grape Creek afforded the native tribes access to year-round water and cool breezes.

I went to Grape Creek Vineyards with my boyfriend and two other couples on October 2nd, 2021. We were so excited to attend the tasting being that this was our first trip to this vineyard to visit for our short Fredericksburg trip and another couple in our group had been members for years and they were so excited to share this experience with us. The tasting started off a bit strange as our friends mentioned when they called to confirm the reservation that the booking agent was adamant about “not even being a minute late” or our reservation would be canceled…okay, fine – a lot of places have specific policies and we have been so excited to show love to local businesses post-Covid. However, when we arrived this behavior became a pattern and more than problematic. Our tasting went great and we were treated to decent wine and laughs by the tasting room associate, so much so that my boyfriend and I signed up for memberships on the spot! We walk out to the ‘members-only patio’ (the only patio available to enjoy your purchased wine and to be seated on) and the experience quickly took a drastic turn for the worse. Again, we had a party of 6 and we were told by the hostess that the covered patio seating was full and we could not sit there…she let us know she’d be seating us on the uncovered patio, which was more than acceptable. However, after being seated we learned that Grape Creek was an ill-managed vineyard catering to a specific clientele (our party had the only two black people in the entire facility…but I digress). We were not only all but ignored by the wait staff, minus one great wine attendant who was sure to bring us glasses for the wine we purchased inside, but we were also approached after 15 minutes (without even the courtesy of a glass of water after being asked) but the operations manager and the head of the facility who not only belittled and raised their voices at us, but demanded the glasses we were drinking out of back and kicked us out of the facility for having the silly notion to want to order a cheeseboard on the ‘entree-only’ patio. It’s not only a silly notion to serve entrees and small plates in different areas, but it wasn’t a policy that was explained to us before being seated. We were also informed, after being seated, that we couldn’t turn our chairs to talk to the other members of our party, because we were told the company doesn’t sit more than 5 individuals together due to Covid in the outdoor seating area (lol). After reviewing their online policies, the actual maximum number for a party is 6. Meaning our party could’ve been accommodated. But that’s not all, we were told if we wanted to eat, we’d need to either only order entrees on the ‘entree-only’ designated seated area or move our party of 6 to the ‘small-plate only’ designated seating area. When asked if we move could we order a cheeseboard, entrees, and additional wine for all 6 of us (easily a $300+ tab) we were met with a blunt ‘no’ by the hostile and quiet frankly disrespectful operations manager whose only goal was to seemingly escalate the situation when our parties’ main objective was to understand the best way to go about ordering food. The cherry on top of this experience was great literally being kicked out by the head of the operation with no attempt to understand the situation at hand. This was an ultimate failure of customer service and solution-oriented communication. I highly encourage you to spend your money at the numerous other equitable and enjoyable vineyards in Fredericksburg than this one. We were extremely dissatisfied and more, plain embarrassed by this entire interaction by the staff at Grape Creek.
Cost for overnight stop?
Due to flight delays, we didn’t get to make it out the main tasting room as planned, but lucky for us, Main Street had a tasting room! I cannot commend Mike enough to explaining the wines and other tidbits to us! I loved ALL of the wines we tried, and we tried comparison pairing. The wines were phenomenal! Had I more room in my suitcase, we would have bought many more than we did. Thank you, Mike, for your incredible knowledge and descriptions and suggestions! You truly made the experience so enjoyable!
